First presented on
October 3, 2002 at the League Of
Home Missions meeting held in Burlington, ON. and
updated on a semi-annual basis.
1. History
The radio broadcast
"The Voice of the Church" has been in
existence for 42 years. Its first message was
broadcast on May 4/68 on KARI AM in Blaine,
Washington, USA. For the last 30 years the Voice
of the Church has been recorded and produced by
the CRBA which is based in Burlington, ON. This
radio evangelism program is produced on behalf of
the 20 supporting Canadian Reformed churches. At
the moment 4 stations carry our weekly program
and our meditations are available on www.sermonaudio.com
2. The Executive
The CRBA executive meets
2-4 times per year to ensure that meditations
have been prepared and that the production of the
weekly broadcast continues uninteruptedly. The
executive presently consists of chairman Pete
deBruin, secretary Cecile deWalle, treasurer
Andrew Westrik and producer Harpert VanderWel.
3. The CRBA, the
VOC and the FVBC
The mandate of the CRBA is
to promote the message of the Gospel via the
radio broadcast and to distribute printed
material. Supporting churches are assessed per
communicant member in order to pay for the
recording and production of the weekly broadcast,
the Voice of the Church. The income generated by
this assessment is only used to pay for the
expenses of the CRBA, and is not intended for
paying for radio time. Each radio station that
carries the broadcast invoices the supporting
churches in that area, and this process does not
involve tthe CRBA. Responses to the radio
broadcast come to us via the regular mail, email
or via the website. The www.sermonaudio.com site sends us monthly reports on
the number of downloads (see statistics below).
4. Production
The process starts with
booking studio time to record the meditations by
the reader, Peter deBruin. The resulting audio
file is edited to filter out any interuptions and
restarts. The titles are read into the computer
by our producer and these files are combined with
suitable music to complete the program. Churches
or Home mission committes are invited to place
announcements at the end of each broadcast along
with the tag of the(ir) supporting church(es).
Programs such as VBS, Bible study programs and
Choir concerts can be advertised on the weekly
broadcast. All broadcasts are aired on the same
weekend on radio stations WDCX - FM, CIMJ - FM,
CIXM-FM, CFAM - AM. WDCX-FM hosts our broadcast
on Saturdays as well. Each program ends with a
tag that identifies the sponsoring committee or
church. The titles of the weekly meditations are
uploaded to the website and emailed to various
church bulletin editors. All sponsoring churches
in our federation receive press releases of our
meetings.
5. Recent
developments
A number of years ago our
mandate was amended to allow students at our
Theological College, who have entered into their
3rd or 4th year of study, to participate in the
preparation of meditations for the "Voice of
the Church". We have also developed this
website, www.voiceofthechurch.org and it contains pertinent
information about the work of the CRBA and its
evangelism outreach radio program. We are also
featured on the internet at www.sermonaudio.com. Audio files of the meditations are
converted to mp3 files, and they are uploaded to
the sermonaudio.com/votc webpage. Once they are on the
website, they can be downloaded or you can listen
to the mp3 files if you have the appropriate
software installed. We have recently updated
these statistics:

7. Observations
We wish to express our
appreciation to the authors of the meditations
that have so faithfully supported this radio
ministry over the years, as well as an estimated
20 congregations that currently support it
financially. The faithful listeners who continue
to request copies of our meditations and some
even send regular monetary donations to help us
offset our expenses. Lastly, the diligent
committee members who continue to give of their
talents, making sure that, year after year, the
production of this broadcast runs smoothly.
8.
Conclusion
The radio broadcast the "VOICE
OF THE CHURCH" definitely has an audience, and
over the many years of its existence has been
allowed to sow the seed of the Good News. In
doing so the C.R.B.A. is fulfilling the God-given
mandate to proclaim His Name, individually and
collectively, out of thankfulness to our heavenly
Father. We plan to do so as long as we receive
the cooperation of the ministers who need to
provide us with meditations for this weekly
program. We also solicit the prayerful and
financial support of the congregations, for we
realize that we may continue to do this work on
their behalf. Please remember this important work
of radio evangelism in your prayers so that the
seed may fall in rich soil and bear much fruit. Soli
Deo Gloria!!
